The Eagles の名曲、Hotel California　このアルバムでジャケットデザインされたのは、ホテルカリフォルニアという名前でなくて、ビバリーヒルズ・ホテルです。2015年カリフォルニアに二週間旅行した際に、このホテルを見てその姿を目に焼き付けました。

この曲を聴くと、ジャック・ニコルソン主演の「シャイニング」という映画を思い出します。物語は雪深いホテルに一家で住むうちに父親に幻覚が見え出し、精神に異常をきたすという設定です。

この曲の詩は難解です。Double meaning という手法で、ひとつの言葉、表現に別の意味を掛け合わせているのです。ほぼ原文の意を汲んでなんとか訳詞をしてみました。

夜毎のパーティ、美しい住人たち、ついつい快楽に誘惑され、長居していたら逃げ出すことができなくなった、そんなホテルなのでしょうか。はたして住人たちは生きているのでしょうか？

 

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair 暗い砂漠のハイウェイ　冷たい風に髪がなびく
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air コリタス（*）の生暖かい香り　空中に放散していく　（*マリファナの一種）
Up ahead in the distance, I saw shimmering light 遥か遠く前方　ちらちら瞬く光が見えた
