George Gershwin ジョージ・ガーシュウィンのお話です。

名曲、サマータイムは1935年、クラシックの訓練を受けた黒人歌手だけのオペラ劇中曲として世に出されました。その当時、黒人に対する風当たりがどれだけ強かったことか、そんな世相の中でこの歌がどれほどの論争を呼んだか、今の私たちにはただ想像するしかありません。

ガーシュウィンは、ユダヤ系ロシアの移民の息子として、ニューヨーク、ブルックリンに生まれました。貧しい家に育ち、学校は落ちこぼれでしたが、ピアノはほぼ独学で修得し、Song Plugger として生計を立てました。（Song Plugger とは曲を売るため楽譜を演奏して宣伝する売り子のこと。）そんな彼は、やがてポピュラーとクラシックを融合した現代音楽の立役者といわれるようになります。

1924年には『ラプソディ・イン・ブルー』（Rhapsody in Blue）を発表します。独学でオーケストレーションを学び、いくつかの管弦楽作品を残しました。『パリのアメリカ人』（An American in Paris 1928年）は、誰もが一度は聴いたことがあるはずです。

天賦の才を与えられたガーシュウィンでしたが、38歳の若さ（1937年）で脳腫瘍で夭折しました。しかし数々の名曲はいまも輝いています。

Summertime is an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin. The song soon became a popular jazz standard.
