Financial Crisis of 2007-2008

あまり思い出したくない事件ですが、リーマンショックは2008年9月に起きました。この背景には、2007年から起こったサブプライム住宅ローン危機に端を発した株式や債券の暴落が引き金となっていました。

いわゆるバブル崩壊と呼ばれる歴史的事件でした。

When the bubble burst, the economy really crashed, not only just the US economy but the global economy. 

「バブルが崩壊すると、経済は文字通り崩壊してしまった。単に米経済にとどまらず世界経済が崩壊したのだった。」

The collapse of the housing market exposed just how rickety the financial system was.

住宅市場がつぶれたことは、金融システムがいかに脆弱なものだったかを知らしめた。」

That was in 2007 and the financial crisis, the credit crunch, that followed was the worst financial crisis since the 1930s and the Great Depression. 

「それは2007年におこり、そのあとに続いた金融危機や貸し渋りは1930年代や世界大恐慌以来、最悪の金融危機だった。」

Major banks crashed and stock markets plummeted. National governments had to step in to bail the banks out. People lost their jobs everywhere.

「大手の銀行がつぶれ、株式市場は急落した。各国政府は銀行救済に乗り出さざるを得なかった。あちらこちらで職を失う人が続出した。」

かつて歴史の授業で「1929年世界大恐慌」を習いましたが、それ以来の金融危機と言われると、それほどのものだったのかと、あらためて驚かされます。
