なぜ、オイスターという名前がついたのか調べてみました。Wikipedia 英語版によれば、こう書かれています。

一方で、“the world is your oyster” の意味はなんでしょう。

これは、シェークスピアの戯曲 The Merry Wives of Windsor（ウィンザーの陽気な女房たち）での次のセリフ、

“Why then the world’s mine oyster. Which I with sword will open.”

が語源となっているとのことです。シェイクスピアのセリフでは「世界は私のオイスターだ。剣で開いてやろう。」と言っていますが、「すべての機会は誰かに開かれている」ことを意味しているのだそうです。

さすが英国ですね。「たかが」と言っては失礼ですが、公共乗り物のプリペイドカードにシェークスピアを引っ張り出してきたわけです。こうしてみると、味わいのあるネーミングと言えます。
